This itinerary explores some of the incredible natural highlights of Nicaragua, starting at the Little Corn Island located 80km from the mainland, a small tropical island with coral reefs that can be explored by snorkelling and diving, a great place to unwind as you begin your holiday.

Then back to the mainland to visit Guacimo Lodge situated on the San Juan river and in the rainforest. After a couple of days exploring the forest you take a boat to the less visited Solentiname islands a small archipelago in the southern region of the huge Lake Nicaraga. Enjoy the wildlife and birdlife here before heading to a luxury ecolodge on the Pacific Coast called Morgan's Rock. Finishing your trip in the colonial city of Granada.

Day to Day

Below is an example day by day itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Managua Airport and transfer to the city. Overnight Elements Boutique Hotel.

Day 2

Fly to Little Corn Island, the smaller of the two islands located 81 kms from the mainland. Relax and enjoy exploring this tiny island where there are no cars or motorcycles. Overnight Yemaya Reefs (B).

Day 3

Day at leisure. Snorkel from the beaches or take a guided snorkel or dive trip with one of the local operators. Overnight Yemaya Reefs (B).

Day 4

Day 5

Fly back to Managua and transfer by vehicle to the town of San Carlos where you will board a boat to take you along the San Juan River to Guacimo Lodge. This rustically comfortable, sustainable lodge is situated on the edge of the vast Indo-Maiz Biosphere Reserve and on the banks of the San Juan River. Your cabins allow you to connect with nature and enjoy the view from your private deck. This evening take a guided night boat tour around the lodge and have the opportunity to see nocturnal species on the river such as the owl, kingfisher and basilisk. Overnight Guacimo Lodge (BLD).

Day 6

Enjoy a guided primary forest tour from the lodge where you may see howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans and many other species of bird including the great green macaw. Overnight Guacimo Lodge (BLD).

Day 7

Today you will take a guided boat trip along the San Juan River to the Sarnoso river where you will get to observe the huge trees in this pristine forest, transfer into a kayak to get closer to the surroundings and possibly observe wildlife such as white faced monkeys and howler monkeys in the trees, plus many bird species. Day 8

Transfer by boat and then another boat to the Solentiname Islands, a small group of islands tucked away in the southern part of Lake Nicaragua. These islands are covered in tropical forest and home to an interesting native community where art plays an important part in their lives. Overnight Hotel Cabanas Paraiso (BLD).

Day 9

Guided boat trip to the Las Guatuzos Wildlife Reserve, and extensive wetland area with over 400 species of birds, green iguana, tapirs, jaguars and spectacled caimans. You will travel to an observation platform for a birds eye view of the reserve. Overnight Hotel Cabanas Paraiso (BLD).

Day 10

Transfer by boat and vehicle to the town of San Juan Del Sur on the Pacific coast and on to the luxury eco-lodge Morgan's Rock where you will spend the next couple of nights (BLD).

Day 11

Enjoy one activity per day at the lodge such as guided birdwatching, hiking, horse riding, monkey and sloth quest, jungle night walk and mangrove kayaking. Overnight Morgan's Rock (BLD).

Day 13

Transfer north by vehicle to the beautiful town of Granada, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in 1524 on the shores of Lake Nicaragua the town has wonderful architecture, is full of history and colonial charm. This afternoon enjoy a guided tour of the city which will include key sites such as the San Francisco Convent and La Merced church, you can climb the belltower affording views across the town, Lake Nicaragua and Mombacho volcano. Then visit a social project initiative to create employment for people with disabilities, here you can enjoy a coffee and learn hammock making principles. Overnight Hotel Boutique Adela (B).

Day 14

Take a boat tour to Las Isletas Archipelago, these islands are covered in forest and home to fishing communities and wildlife. Stops along the way for your guide to point out wildlife, you will also visit an island and a Spanish fortress. Overnight Hotel Boutique Adela (B).
